pH and ORP Sensors
pH Sensors
The Turtle Tough range of General Purpose pH Sensors have been designed for the most common application and installation types. These sensors take into account the most typical installation methods, such as immersion, submersion, twist lock and valve retractable (hot tap) styles. High Temperature and Dehydration resistant are also general qualities required across a broad range of applications.
The chemical resistance properties of all sensors have been designed to perform well across a wide range of expected conditions. Don’t for a second be fooled into thinking that general purpose means average performance. Designed to be good all-rounders many of these sensors are loaded with features. Our general purpose range features the toughest sensor we’ve ever made… the Turtle Tough Digital Extreme!
ORP Sensors
ORP sensors have been designed to work in the world’s most extreme harsh liquid analysis applications The ORP sensors provide measurement solutions in precious metal refining such as gold, copper, nickel and zinc. ORP sensor also works well for titanium dioxide production, ammonium nitrate, solvent extraction, and industrial waste water applications.
Turtle Tough sensors provide superior reliability, lower maintenance, less drift (better accuracy) and we guarantee the lowest cost of ownership

Applications
Gold
Copper
Copper ores are typically concentrated by either froth flotation or hydrometallurgical extraction, both of which have unique process challenges. Froth flotation is wrought with measurement difficulties; surfactants will coat measurement elements and report incorrect results where xanthates will continuously attack probe bodies and measurement elements, rendering sensors unusable very quickly. Copper oxide ores are typically leached with sulphuric acid and subsequently refined further via solvent extraction, with acids, sulphides and solvents all aggressively attacking all elements of the sensor.
The standard sensor is supplied with high levels of chemical resistance, including sulphide and dissolved gas resistance. Optionally, if the application requires we use solvent resistant sealants and different body plastics depending on the solids content of the ores. With this often tough application we are continuously evaluating each installation to ensure we supply the most robust and accurate sensor for copper ore processes. We are proud to say that our performance in this application has been unmatched anywhere in the world.
Nickel
Ammonia injection and solvent extraction are two critical components of nickel extraction in process environments. Dissolved gas ingress into the sensing elements of pH sensors is a common cause of premature sensor failure. Solvent extraction also presents some unique challenges to pH measurement, as the presence of organic solvents will dissolve many common materials of construction while the small water volumes in the extraction process frequently present very extreme pH measurements.
This sensor is available with our digital smart sensor technology. This plug and play sensor has a quick connect fitting, eliminating the need for hard wiring to the analyser. On-board sensor memory allows the storage of calibration data, analyser configurations and sensor service history. This allows the sensor to be conveniently maintained and calibrated off-site or in the laboratory and pre-programmed with calibration data and analyser configurations.
Zinc
Zinc is leached using sulphuric acid, which dissolves the zinc content and leaves the iron and lead precipitates undissolved. However, the process can be inefficient if there aren’t adequate process controls in place, and can lead to lower grade products. Sensors will often drift significantly, and there is constant attack on the pH glass elements from the dissolved zinc complexes. In conjunction with one of our major clients, we developed a pH glass element that resists attack from these zinc complexes, which both improves sensor lifetime and greatly reduced sensor drift.
Additional sulphide resistance has been added to all components and by increasing the physical strength of the body this sensor can also be used in in high velocity, high solid content slurries where other sensors will easily break. The improved accuracy and stability of this sensor has proved itself in improving zinc yields, while the increased sensor lifetime will reduce labour costsand total cost of ownership.
Due to the high resistance qualities of this sensor it is only available in our digital smart sensor technology.
Maintenance
All Turtle Tough pH, ORP, Conductivity and Ion Selective measurement sensors have no serviceable components. This means completely maintenance free operation – for the entire life of the sensor. A truly superior sensor must be impervious to ingress. Turtle Tough sensors are solid state and totally sealed for life. Not only will they resist process contamination but they are completely maintenance free. There is
no gel or electrolyte to be refilled, no reference to replace and no o-rings or seals to be compromised or replenished.
